When Organic is Most Important
According to the Environmental Working Group’s annual list of the “dirty dozen” and the “clean 15” fruits and vegetables, the most pesticide-contaminated crops in the US are (in order of toxicity) Peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots and pears.
Onions lead the list of “safe” conventionally grown crops, followed by avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, mangoes, asparagus, sweet peas, kiwis, cabbage, eggplants, papayas, watermelon, broccoli, tomatoes and sweet potatoes.
