Naturopathic Principles for Sexual Health
Naturopathic Principles for Sexual Health
Sexual dysfunction is a common health problem—affecting up to 30 percent of men and 45 percent of women. The definition of female sexual dysfunction includes disorders of libido (sex drive), arousal, orgasm, and sexual pain leading to personal distress or relationship problems. While not as obvious as sexual dysfunction in males, a woman’s lack of desire creates a problem for her—and the one she loves.
As a naturopathic physician, I recommend the following for anyone experiencing sexual problems:
- Follow a whole, natural foods diet.
- Rule out food sensitivities/allergies.
- Get adequate exercise regularly.
- Enjoy plenty of fresh air and sunshine.
- Address psychosocial issues/stressors.
- Consider hormonal issues, including herbal treatment for peri- and postmenopausal women.
- Explore any underlying medical conditions.
- Rule out side effects from medications.
- Consider vitamins (like C and E) and herbs like gotu kola that promote collagen and integrity of mucus membrane tissue.
- Eat a diet rich in essential fatty acids or take supplements with fish oil or combinations of borage/evening primrose/flax/hemp oils.
