Keys to Youthful Skin

We’re bombarded on a daily basis with skin-care products that claim to reverse the effects of aging. Cutting through the hype isn’t easy, but several ingredients have proven effective in rejuvenating and improving the skin. These star players are often found in combination formulas. Borage Oil It’s rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which has been shown to diminish the dehydration that is common with aging skin. Green and White Teas Look for them in combination with mangosteen and pomegranate extracts. These potent antioxidants, taken together, were shown in a recent study to “enhance the improvement of age-related changes in the skin.” Benefits included increased smoothness and reduced pore size. Pomegranate The extract of this superfruit protects against cell damage caused by exposure to the sun. Nutrient- and antioxidant-rich, this ingredient also helps prevent fine lines and helps firm the skin. According to skin-care expert Myra Michelle Eby, “The sun is your skin’s worst enemy. Sun exposure is the primary cause of premature aging, brown spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer.” Primrose Oil Another good source of GLA, primrose oil may improve deficient levels of essential fatty acids and help clear up flaky, rash-prone skin. Resveratrol The main active polyphenol in red wine, resveratrol has been shown to be beneficial for a variety of skin disorders. A recent study concluded that “delivery via skin route may be a potent way to achieve the therapeutic effects of resveratrol.” Soy Soy extracts can improve the production of compounds that support firm skin. A topical application that includes extracts of soybean germ may reduce inflammation and protect against ultraviolet damage from the sun. This ingredient also keeps skin hydrated, decreases roughness, and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
