Beauty the Natural Way

With more than 800 chemicals used in the fragrance industry found by The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to be poisonous substances, consumers should be aware of ingredients when purchasing cosmetics and consider opting for natural. Sixty percent of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies–which is why it is no surprise more than 38,000 cosmetic injuries requiring medical attention are reported annually, the most common injury being eye infections caused by mascara.

The criteria for organic or natural cosmetics is simple. Cosmetics labeled “organic” must have at least seventy percent organic ingredients. Unlike conventional cosmetics, natural cosmetics cannot contain synthetic chemicals and must be 100 percent biodegradable.

In contrast, there is at least one toxic substance in almost every conventional cosmetic. Take Maybelline SuperStay Silky Foundation –found in the ingredients are three toxic substances. One of them, dimethicone, does not allow your skin to breathe, and it is non-biodegradable. Another, methylparaben, is a highly toxic irritant to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Finally, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, also known as an Anionic Surfactant, poses serious health risks. Surfactants like these are used in car washing detergents and engine degreasers.

In natural cosmetics, you are more likely to find ingredients that are free of preservatives, oils, fragrances, binders, and talc. These cosmetics are specially designed to allow your skin to breathe. In addition to matching any skin color, natural cosmetics are ideal for all skin types–normal, dry, or sensitive. For example, Organic Crème Deluxe Foundation by Nvey Eco has a simple ingredient list compared to that of the conventional cosmetic: natural beeswax, lavender flower extract, natural vitamin E, and thyme extract, just to name a few. Not only does this product sound natural, but it has been certified organic by the Organic Food Chain of Australia.

Natural and organic cosmetics can be found in natural food stores. They can also be purchased in cosmetic and personal care stores like Sephora and many department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom.

The most important thing to remember when purchasing cosmetics is to read labels. Also, remember to think for your skin, and choose the most beneficial products. For a complete list of harmful ingredients in cosmetics, click here.
