6 Need-To-Know Sun Safety Tips
Sun safety recommendations from the Academy of Dermatology include:
1. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including lips, ears, and hands, a half-hour before going outside, even on cloudy days. Reapply often.
2. All lotions, including water-resistant products, can be washed off during swimming or periods of heavy perspiring. Rubbing skin dry with a towel also removes sunscreen, so reapply lotions after swimming or exercising.
3. Follow the ‘Shadow Rule.’ If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s damaging rays are at their strongest, and burning is likely. Be extra careful during these times, and if you are sun sensitive, you may want to consider avoiding the sun entirely.
4. Use enough sunscreen: One ounce, which is enough to fill a shot glass, is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body sufficiently.
5. Wear sun-protective clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat, tightly woven clothing, and sunglasses.
6. Perform a self-skin check at least once a year, and if you notice any changes, including new moles or changes in existing ones, see a dermatologist.
