10 Tips for Healthy Holidays

  1. Find foods that will provide you with energy and nutrients during the colder months. Choose cooked grains, legumes, squash, and nuts, plus warming spices such as cayenne, ginger, and chili.
  2. This season can be demanding, so get plenty of sleep to recharge yourself and boost immunity.
  3. Allow yourself a few holiday food treats, but don’t let these become a daily habit. By avoiding sugar for a few days, you can break the craving for sweets.
  4. Attending parties with food and drink? Eat lightly before the event. Make sure to have some protein to balance any high-carb foods you may eat.
  5. Rather than focusing on a party’s refreshments, make an effort to get to know the other guests. This can help cultivate deeper relationships with others and protect you from overindulging.
  6. When eating meals away from home, try to steer clear of excess sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and rich foods.
  7. Nutritional deficiencies and emotional stress can weaken your immunity. Enjoy a wholesome diet, and express feelings of love and appreciation to family and friends.
  8. To help avoid dreaded holiday colds and flu, build up your resistance with echinacea, vitamin C, and a good-quality multivitamin/mineral.
  9. Find time to exercise. Include a balance of aerobics, weight training, and stretching activities for endurance, strength, and flexibility. This helps to detoxify your body and support immunity.
  10. Though the holiday season may be busy, include time for reflection and meditation.
