10 Tips for Healthy Travels
Vacation time is finally here! Whether you’re going across town, across the country, or around the world, a little planning will ensure that you and your family have a safe, enjoyable trip.
- Use a travel guide to research your destination. Besides where to stay and what to see and do, you’ll find local emergency telephone numbers.
- Drink plenty of pure water, especially if your destination is hotter or drier than your home environment or if you are flying. Avoid beverages with sugar, caffeine, or alcohol, which contribute to dehydration.
- To avoid “traveler’s tummy,” don’t eat anything not boiled, well cooked, or peeled—especially if your destination is outside the U.S.
- If you do fall victim, let your stomach rest, and stay hydrated. Use probiotics (acidophilus and other friendly bacteria) to help prevent and treat intestinal problems.
- Carry nourishing snacks, including fruits, unsalted nuts, and sunflower seeds, and avoid junk foods.
- Use sunscreen, natural insect repellent, and protective clothing when you’re outdoors. Check for ticks after hiking, and watch out for poison oak and ivy. Carry a small first-aid kit.
- Nutritional supplements, including vitamins C and E, beta carotene, and selenium, can minimize the stress of travel. Keep them in the shade or in a cooler along with any prescription medications.
- Don’t overdo it. Choose activities appropriate for the ages and fitness levels of your children and yourself.
- Sightseeing, hiking, or a few days at the beach will rekindle your Earth connection, with benefits that last beyond the season. Leave your laptop, your cell phone, and your stress behind.
- Straighten the house before you leave. Home will seem even sweeter when you’ve left things clean, tidy, and organized.
