Homeopathy for Weekend Warriors
Warm weather brings our “inner” athlete outdoors again. It feels great to go for a jog, bike ride, or hike in the fresh air. But if we’re new to an activity, train improperly, or only have time to work out on the weekends, we run the risk of sore muscles, bruises, sprains, and strained tendons.
Whether you’re a conditioned athlete or just motivated by the weather to get out and exercise, it’s important to take some necessary steps to avoid injuring yourself. If you do suffer an occasional twisted ankle, bruised knee, or sore muscle, a variety of homeopathic remedies can start you on the road to recovery.
First Things First: Prevention
Injuries often seem to be an inevitable part of exercise, especially if you’re out of shape. Yet according to professional triathlete Eric Harr, there’s plenty you can do. “Most sports injuries are preventable. They usually result from the use of improper gear, poor exercise techniques, a lack of physical strength, or bad exercise habits.” To prevent injuries, seek expert advice. Have your bike adjusted and your running shoes fitted by professionals.
Another way to protect yourself is by warming up before exercising. “The warm-up will increase the temperature of the ligaments, blood, tendons, and muscles, allowing them to become more mobile and elastic,” says Joanna Hall, author of The Exercise Bible. “A proper warm-up should involve light aerobic work which puts your major joints, such as your shoulders, hips, knees, and spine, through their ranges of motion,” she adds. Weight training is also insurance against injuries—the stronger your muscles, ligaments, and tendons are, the less likely they are to tear.
Homeopathic First Aid
We’ve all had times when we’ve worked out a little too hard, stretched our muscles a bit too far, or just rushed into exercise too quickly after a sedentary period, only to find ourselves in pain the next day. For the times you wake up sore after the previous day’s workout or injure yourself during that first jog of the season, look no further than the homeopathy section of your local natural products store.
Taken internally or used topically, as a single dilution or a combination formula, homeopathic remedies offer a variety of safe, over-the-counter treatments—without side effects—for a number of sports injuries. In fact, homeopathic medicines are far safer than conventional drugs such as corticoids, which can damage tissue, or painkillers, which can slow healing.
The vast majority of studies, mostly reported in medical journals in Europe where homeopathy is widely used and respected, have confirmed their effectiveness. A German study of close to 3,500 men and women taking a homeopathic combination that included Arnica montana, Calendula officinalis, and Hamamelis virginiana found more than 80 percent experienced “good” or “very good” results with bruises, sprains, hematomas, swelling, and other common sports injuries.
Homeopathic remedies work best for acute, short-term problems: aches, blisters, bruises, pain aggravated by motion, or overexertion. For long-term, chronic musculoskeletal conditions, a professional homeopath can provide guidance for a broad-based treatment program.
The homeopathic medicines listed in the adjacent chart are recommended for a number of conditions you may encounter after you dust off your golf clubs or tennis racket, take up a new sport too enthusiastically, or simply overdo any exercise. While the right homeopathic remedy can ease pain and heal an injury quickly, don’t forget the RICE formula: rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the sore or sprained tissue for one to three days after an injury. To minimize swelling, don’t apply heat to the injured area. Always contact your healthcare practitioner for advice—and make an appointment, if needed. The sooner you take a homeopathic remedy after an injury, the more effective it will be, so keep several in your workout bag.
